I’m have an Acer Timeline 3810 which does not have an optical drive. I am eligible to receive a free Windows 7 upgrade disk when it is released, but since there is no optical drive, how am I supposed to install it?
Are you sure you don’t have an optical drive? A CD drive or a DVD drive are both optical drives! Just checkin
You’d need an optical drive…or the know how to create a bootable USB drive image of the disc.
If you have a network with a computer with a compatible optical drive, then you could try sharing the drive on the network and installing over the network. Possibly a bit dicey for an operating system, but it’s something to try.
Or, buy a cheap external optical drive — I assume the computer has USB ports? A quick glance at shows a lot of them available around $60.

if you try to use this way then it will not work.
To do this you have to purchase OEM XP CD from Microsoft and then you can Install XP first and then Linux second after Windows XP.
You can keep both Operating system.
But cannot change.
